Today's farming

Spring -25 has arrived, and new opportunities plants that have been pre-cultivated are planted in the growing tunnels. I have great faith in the combination of swales, hugelkultur and growing tunnels.

 Project this year: made a hotbed.
In the old garden (1950), which was planted with spruce trees (1960) that have now been cut down and the roots laid in a pile on the bedrock. This spot has the best sun conditions, and there is water nearby. The roots will be covered with smaller trees and spruce branches, and finally with grass and soil.

 Project this year: Forest garden in the forest. The forest will be cleared and fruit trees will be planted

From winter -25:
Oh, a little early with this chapter. Here I will post about what is happening during the season.
 
Farming is about knowledge and planning. In a varied climate, weather conditions must be exploited. Winter and darkness are a great time for studies. 

The seeds have sprouted faster than I remember them sprouting before. Now we are heading towards a cold period (february 25), but it should be milder in March. I have installed extra lights over the window. If the beginning of March gets cold, I have a problem.

Time to chop trees and cut firewood. I was on my way out to the forest, but then the wheel fell off in the middle of the field.

 I brought in a few more buckthorns. It's still cold in the greenhouse at night.

These buckthorns were sown in -24, now they rest safely under the snow. In mid-February the night temperature was -15 celsius.

In an attempt to increase the soil temperature to start growing earlier, I have placed tarpaulins over some of the growing beds.

Slanted windows, sealed with XPS boards on the sides. As a last resort I installed them last year. The strawberry plants that I planted there in the fall are still alive in January, without any form of heating.

The picture is from winter solstice, and the plants were green early in january.
Update: after a cold spell in January with temperatures down to -15 degrees, these plants have also entered hibernation mode.
