MUSKEDALEN PERMACULTURE FARM
The concept of permaculture started in American agriculture to solve challenges with depleted soil. Later it has developed into a grassroots movement for an ecological philosophy of life. It was all the smart techniques for growing and building that sparked my interest in permaculture. Afterwards I saw that permaculture also contained fields I had been involved with earlier in life such as politics and shamanism.
Permaculture is a design system for weaving a sustainable existence. We use a framework of tools when we design our lives to achieve the goal of a footprint the earth can tolerate. Permaculture is about how we think and organize our lives. Muskedalen Regenerative is a place for applied permaculture. "The place where theory manifests itself in practice"
Permaculture has developed into a people's movement for a sustainable lifestyle. Permaculture philosophy is based on ancient knowledge, (indigenous philosophy), and new thinking. Permaculture is based on living in interaction with a living nature. Permaculturists understand nature and establish sustainable ecosystems where they live. We see humans as part of nature and believe that we are dependent on the interaction with nature to maintain our existence. The industrial society we are based on today is constantly destroying our ecosystem. We see that a change in the existing culture is necessary to achieve the goal of a society close to nature.
In Muskedalen, the facilities are simple, the house is small, the outbuilding as well. This means that I have lowered my requirements and adapted to a simpler lifestyle. Those who come to visit learn to think differently and explore living in a more humble way. The place needs more people, but the challenge is that there is no indoor accommodation here.
At times it is natural for people to live alone. It provides an opportunity to work focused on their life's mission and carry it out. We are going to move from an industrial society to a society close to nature. I have one foot in each society. In relation to the ideals we have, it is necessary to make compromises. This makes it necessary to use high technology such as computers, tractors, private cars and chainsaws. Gasoline and diesel are used to operate the tractor and small engines. There are lots of tools on the farm, and most of the technology used here I can repair myself. That is why I have a repair area in the yard.
When we are going to move from an industrial society to a society close to nature, new technology must be developed. Not necessarily that advanced, but it must play in harmony with nature. Innovation and testing new concepts are part of the business at Muskedalen. The urine system, the cultivation system with a combination of hugelkultur and swales are new concepts that are being tested here. The 4-element design system is an observation system for cultivation that is being developed here.
As we approach a society close to nature, our values will change. The emptiness from digital screen use will be replaced with living cultural subjects such as music, dance and poetry. People need to gather, experience silence to establish an inner peace. We have a need to connect with the living in nature as humans have done for millennia. By recreating practices from the ancient nature religions, we move the human mind into nature.
When we move from our Western culture and way of thinking, it touches many aspects that are embedded in our culture and way of thinking. We are going into something that is foreign and unknown to many. Not least, we are going to reach deeper into ourselves. This will happen gradually, perhaps over a period of time as long as we have spent establishing our Western culture.
Welcome to Muskedalen!
